The Varminter by Shurley Brothers is similar in shape to our Sporter line but is much larger at all dimensions. The Varminter line features a 2-1/4″ to 2-1/2″ rounded forearm which is perfectly engineered for the walking varmint hunter who may or may not be using a bi-pod during his days afield. Like all stocks we produce, our Varminter is made from luxurious hardwoods and can be built with carbon fiber stringers to raise strength and rigidity throughout the stock. Varminter 0001 is made of Walnut with Mesquite stringers and a Curly Maple center lamination. It also has Mesquite burl tips to dress it up even more.
This line of stocks takes a wide range of action profiles and diameters as well as barrel channels. We have built walking varminters for clients who used 1.350″ standard round actions and joined them with a large diameter 1.250″ straight taper barrel to make the ultimate long range prone varmint hunting rifle. Larger barrels in the 1.450″ class are not recommended for this stock. They are simply too big. The Varminter family makes a wonderful platform for both single shot and repeater style rifles. We recommend all the traditional varmint chamberings for this stock. 22-250, 6 BR, 20 Vartarg, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 6 mm Ackley Improved are all fantastic choices.
Varminter 0001 was not CNC cut. It was one of our last duplicator cut stocks and as such is not quite symmetrical. On this stock the center lam is off center. The stock is straight as a whole but the lamination its self is not. Varminter 0001 has a slightly larger palm swell than our Sporter line of stocks as well. This makes it a bit more comfortable for longer shooter sessions where you might be up on your rifle for a long period of time waiting for the animal to show.
